Preparing for your first appointment

A little preparation helps us make the most of your time with the specialist.

  • Allow 60–120 minutes; diagnostic tests and dilation take time.
  • Bring your current glasses, contact lens details and sunglasses.
  • Bring a list of your medications and any previous eye reports or referral letters.
  • Do not drive after your appointment if your pupils may be dilated.
  • Note down questions you would like to ask.

Eye examination guide

A comprehensive eye examination typically includes several steps.

  • A conversation about your symptoms, general health and family history.
  • Vision and prescription testing.
  • Eye pressure measurement.
  • Slit-lamp examination of the front of the eye.
  • Dilated examination and imaging of the retina and optic nerve where needed.

Cataract surgery preparation

Your surgical team will give you personalised instructions. Common preparation steps include:

  • Attending a pre-operative assessment for measurements and health checks.
  • Arranging for someone to accompany you home on the day.
  • Following instructions about eye drops and any medications before surgery.
  • Avoiding eye make-up on the day of surgery.

LASIK consultation preparation

Accurate measurements depend on a stable cornea.

  • Stop wearing contact lenses for the period advised by the clinic before screening.
  • Bring previous prescriptions to help confirm stability.
  • Allow around two hours, and arrange not to drive afterwards.

Post-operative care information

Recovery instructions are specific to your procedure and will be provided in writing by your care team. General principles include:

  • Use prescribed eye drops exactly as directed.
  • Avoid rubbing the eye and protect it as instructed.
  • Attend every scheduled follow-up appointment.
  • Contact the clinic urgently if you experience increasing pain, worsening vision or significant redness.
